Dark!Elsa appreciation post. (◠‿◠✿)
Can we just take a sec to appreciate the fact that this is probably the darkest representation of a Disney protagonist?
I mean, I’m not saying that every movie character should go out and try to shove a guy off a mountain, but even the purest character has dark thoughts at least once in their life. No real person can have a perpetually flawless face and perfect morals like earlier Disney princesses. For example, Snow White was a sweetie, sure, but there wasn’t much character complexity to relate to.
Elsa’s TOTALLY different.
I’ve never seen a Disney princess (queen, in this case) with her face twisted into such a hating grimace. I’ve never seen one act as violently as Elsa does here. Even though she acted in self-defense initially, there is little doubt in my mind that she would have pushed the goon off the balcony had Hans not come in and shouted to her.
But despite that, she’s not evil - not by a long shot. She simply lost herself for a moment, reverting to her basic fighting instinct once flight failed. Depression, anxiety, isolation, fear, defensiveness…Snow White ain’t got nothin’ on that, complexity-wise.
She’s not flawless in character, nor is her face always picture-perfect (fourth gif, especially). She’s REAL - more realistic than most other princesses, I think. I’m glad that Disney emphasized that darkness doesn’t necessarily mean evil, and that the best people aren’t always the perkiest or happiest.
